SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No.44-ranked Saint Leo men’s tennis team (11-4) saw their nine match home stretch come to a close on a high note as they swept Bentley University (5-5), 9-0, Thursday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
The win is the Saint Leo’s 10th-consecutive Division II victory and second straight overall.
In the sweep, the upstart Lions saw dominating displays at every slot as only one opponent registered more than four points in any set.
The No.23-ranked pair of Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier overpowered the team of Zach Tuckman and Alec Spycher, 8-1 to give the Lions their first point.
Aloua Adjenak and Jose Morales followed with an impressive 8-2 victory at No. 3, downing Rodrigo Ribiero and Jimmy Rindo.
The Lions’ tandem of Pablo Chavez and Tom Gleeson completed the doubles performance by breezing past Victor Suski and Andrew Waddington at No.2, 8-4.
Carrying all the momentum over from doubles, the Lions immediately solidified the match and the team’s final non-region match win.
After Adjenak paced Tuckman in straight sets 6-3, 6-0, Chavez sealed the deal with the team’s fifth point in 6-1, 6-1 win at No.3 singles.
Lozier and Gleeson followed with dominating wins at the No.1 and No.4 singles slots. Lozier bounced Ribeiro 6-0, 6-3, while Gleeson conquered Spycher, 6-1, 6-4.
Morales routed Waddington 6-1, 6-1, and Yves Jacobs proved to be better than his opponent, Matthew Chase, as he edged the Falcons No.6 competitor 7-5, 7-6.
Saint Leo resumes region action on Saturday, March 19 when they travel to West Palm Beach, Fla. to take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. Doubles will begin the match at approximately 1:00 p.m.
