SAINT LEO, Fla. – In what can only be described as a rollercoaster season, the Saint Leo men's soccer team enters the Sunshine State Conference with a clean slate. A win or go home scenario, the Lions will challenge the team that handed them their most lopsided loss of the 2011 campaign, Barry.
A 6-0 defeat to the Buccaneers last month in Miami Shores, the Lions have retribution on their minds. Backing their confidence is a pair of double overtime, shutouts victories over Florida Tech and Tampa in their season finales.
With defensive lapses having been solved, the Lions are focused on taking down the No.4 –seeded Buccaneers for only ninth time in the series history. Barry currently holds an 18-8-1 edge over Saint Leo.
Overall, the Lions enter tonight's match with the No.5-seed in the SSC Tournament and possess a 9-5-0 record. The Lions have three players with double figures points, including Joel Purkiss who leads the squad with 18 points (7 G, 4 A).
McKenzey Scott guides the way for the Lions' in net, collecting a 9-5 mark, in addition to a 1.60 goals-against-average.
Mark Anderson is the Bucs' goal scorer, amassing a conference-leading 19 goals. He's also chipped in four assists for 42 points. Johnny Rodrigues has solidified the Barry defense with an 11-2 mark in goal.
"We've grown as a team, especially over the latter part of the season," stated Coach Keith Fulk. "We're excited to play quality team in Barry and competing hard from beginning to end. Tonight is a night for redemption."
The winner of tonight's match will advance to play Lynn, Friday in Boca Raton, Fla.
