SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team (7-3, 2-2 SSC), behind the efforts of a Daniel Valdez header, upset the No.25-ranked Lynn University Fighting Knights (7-4, 3-2 SSC) by the score of 1-0, Saturday night from University Field in Sunshine State Conference action.
In what turned out to be a defensive struggle, Valdez punched home the only goal of the contest as his header in the 10th-minute helped Saint Leo to even their SSC record at 2-2.
The Lions found the breakthrough goal just 9:50 into the first half when Edgar Herrera dribbled around the right edge of the box and lofted a precision pass to the leaping head of Valdez who rocketed the ball home for the eventual game-winner.
The Lions' defense highlighted the remaining 90 minutes as the Saint Leo back four, led by Joey Lontrato, did not break against the high-powered Lynn offense.
The squad conceded only three corners and four shots-on-goal during the 90 minutes of play.
Solidifying the Lions' second clean sheet of the season was McKenzey Scott, who notched three saves on 16 Lynn shots.
The Lions, on the other hand, blasted 12 shots and earned five corner kicks.
