Baseball Picks Up Sunday Win over Bentley

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team won their fourth game in a row as they upended visiting Bentley University 8-3 in a Sunday afternoon matinee at Southard Stadium.

Improving to 8-11 overall, the Saint Leo offense showed up early in the game as J.C. Suarez led off with a double down the right field line.  The senior would score later in the inning when Ryan Powers ripped an RBI-single up the middle to put SLU on the board.

Heading into the third leading 1-0, the Lions would score two runs in each of the next two innings, sparked by an RBI triple to left-center from the bat of Ware Hart in the third, and three singles from Suarez, Ryan Gawrych and Eugene Garnett Jr. to put Saint Leo up 5-1.

While the SLU bats were scoring runs, Saint Leo starting pitcher Marshall Stalvey was focused on shutting down the Bentley bats.  The junior did an impressive job in seven innings of work as he only allowed the visitors Waltham, Mass. a single run on five hits while he struck out a Saint Leo season-best 12 batters.  Stalvey (1-3) picked up the first win of his Saint Leo career after tossing 109 pitches and facing 28 batters.

Saint Leo capped their scoring in the sixth when catcher Jovanni Fiallo blasted the first pitch of his at-bat over the left field fence for a two-run round tripper, giving the Lions an 8-1 advantage.

Offensively, SLU would be led by Dustin Brown, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI.  He was one of six Lions to post multiple hits in the win.

Bentley (3-8) pitcher John Yohe (1-2) only managed five-plus innings of work before succumbing to the Lion bats as he picked up the loss.

The Lions will now welcome back American International College on Monday evening as they look to take two games in three days from the visiting Yellow Jackets when SLU and AIC square off with a 6:00 p.m. first-pitch at Thomas B. Southard Stadium on the Saint Leo campus.
