BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s tennis team (3-14, 0-4 SSC) dropped a Sunshine State Conference match to the No.4-ranked Lynn University Fighting Knights (12-3, 3-0 SSC) 9-0, Saturday afternoon from the Perper Tennis Complex.
After dropping three doubles matches, the Lions battled in singles action. Still, the squad could not pull out a victory as the Fighting Knights capped the sweep.
Despite the score, a trio of Lions shined in defeat. First at No.3 doubles, the Saint Leo combo of Michael Calloway and Tim Balz-Herrmann went point-for-point with the Lynn Duo of Axel Joachim and Kyle Hall. Unfortunately, a late Fighting Knights charge gave them the final two points of the match as Lynn took home an 8-6 win.
On the singles side, it was Balz-Herrmann who took center stage for SLU. The freshman overpowered Carlos Sanz in the first set 7-5. Sanz battled back to take set two 6-4, tying the match at one apiece. With the match already decided, Balz-Herrmann and Sanz tangled in a super tiebreaker. After exchanging the first few points it was Sanz who rallied for 10-4 set and match victory.
Pablo Chavez also had a solid afternoon, despite being taken in straight-sets 6-3, 6-3.
The Lions continue their south Florida road swing on Sunday afternoon as they take on St. Thomas University. First serve is set for noon.
