SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s tennis team (3-12) dropped a 9-0, non-conference decision to the Rollins College Tars (10-7), Wednesday evening from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
After a taking each of first three matches in doubles play, the Tars continued their impressive performance with a sweep of singles action. Despite the outcome, the Lions had some select individual performances that challenged their cross-state rivals.
No. 2 doubles gave SLU their best shot at victory. Still, the duo of Morris and Rowland proved to be too much as they pulled away from Pablo Chavez and Richard Maclachlan in the end for an 8-2 win.
On the singles side, Yves Jacobs was the most consistent performer for the Green & Gold. The Wesley Chapel, Fla. product made his opponent, Girts Dzelde, stay sharp the entire match. But in the end it was Dzelde who caught all the good breaks and walked away with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Julian Jean-Pierre and Jose Morales also challenged their opponents with a trio of points in the second set. Still, the Tars held off the late rallies while wrapping-up the straight-sets wins.
The Lions will take an extended break from home action, but will continue play on Thursday, March 25 in Orlando, Fla. The squad is set to take on nationally-ranked Ouachita Baptist University with first serve set for 11:00 a.m.
