Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Top-Ranked Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team managed an impressive second-day, Sunshine State Conference-series split on the road as the Lions defeated the No. 1 Moccasins 3-2 in the opening game and then fell on a last-inning home run in the 11-10 nightcap loss.

SLU right-hander Marshall Stalvey took the hill in the first game and tossed a beauty, surrendering just two runs to a team that averages almost 10 runs per game.  In throwing the complete nine innings, the junior scattered nine hits in picking up his second victory of the year.  He struck out five Florida Southern (24-3, 3-2 SSC) hitters while walking just one.

Most of the Lions runs came in the second inning as Eugene Garnett Jr. doubled to left-centerfield to drive in Ryan Brnovich for the first SLU run.  Garnett was then brought home when senior catcher Jovanni Fiallo knocked a single to right-center, putting Saint Leo up 2-0.

The Lions (14-15, 3-6 SSC) would advance the score to 3-0 in the fifth with a one-out double down the left field line.  Ware Hart, the next batter in the order, would score Suarez when he traded spots with the senior on an RBI double.

Florida Southern made the game interesting when they scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but Stalvey would get out of the jam and proceed to work his way through the final six outs for the SLU victory.

The Moccasins' Zach Maggard led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off home run to give FSC an 11-10 win in the second game.  The homer came after the Lions surrendered an early 6-0 lead and then responded from a 10-7 deficit in the last inning to tie the game, forcing Maggard to close the game out.
