SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s tennis team found the going tough as they lost an 8-1 decision to the visiting No. 2 Barry Buccaneers at the SLU Tennis Center on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Lions did manage to take a game from the visitors for the first time in seven years.
The Bucs (6-0, 4-0 SSC), playing a highly edited version of their lineup, swept the singles and took two of three doubles.
Max Wimmer and Emanuel Fraitzl, ranked #9 in the ITA poll, beat Yves Jacobs and Jose Morales 8-4 at the top flight, while David Barragan and Ruben Penate, playing together for the first time, downed Tim Balz-Herrmann and Michael Calloway 8-1 at number three.
The Lions (1-7, 0-1 SSC) took their only point at number two doubles as Pablo Chavez and Richard Maclachlan edged Simon Raagaard and Jakub Fejfar 8-5.
The Bucs swept the singles. At number one, #11 Marco Mokrzycki shut down Chavez 6-3, 6-0. Andrew Sharnov made short work of Jacobs 6-2, 6-3, while Sergio Velez defeated Morales 6-4, 6-2 at number three.
