No. 28 Women’s Tennis Blanked by No. 11 Tars, 9-0

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s tennis team fell or the third straight match Thursday, falling to the 11th-ranked Rollins College Tars (2-0) 9-0, from the Martin Tennis Complex in Winter Park, Fla.

In the non-conference event, the Lions dropped each of their matches. Shaena Keefe led the team in their closest contest of the day at No.2 singles. Keefe rallied to pull within a few points of her opponent, but Holly Flemming pulled near the end of the first set to claim a 6-3 win. The second set was just as intriguing for the fans in attendance as Keefe refused to lie down. The Spring Hill, Fla. native fought through a deficit to draw within one point, 5-4. Unfortunately, the senior lost the final point to fall in the match in straight sets.

Jeanette McDonald and Gina Schifano also strung together points, but could not pull out a victory, falling 6-2, 6-0.

It was a struggle for the women in doubles play, as well. Aside from the No. 1 team of Keefe and McDonald, the No.2 and No.3 doubles pairs were shutout.

“It was a great measuring tool for us.” Said Head Coach James Bryce, “Rollins is one of the best teams in the country and I feel there were instances where we matched up well with them.” He went to say, “There is still a lot of work that needs to be done, but I feel this team is on the right track.”

Saint Leo returns to the court on Saturday, February 13th for a conference showdown with Florida Tech. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. from Melbourne, Fla.
