SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo men’s soccer player Bruce Cutler was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District first team, it was announced Tuesday. The third time being honored with the unique distinction, Cutler is now eligible for All-America credit. In addition, Scott Stefanek and Jonathan Glenn were selected Academic All-District second team.
As for Cutler, the Inverurie, Scotland native has compiled outstanding numbers academically, as well as on the field for the Lions. He has a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.98 at Saint Leo, and is expected to graduate in May with a degree in mathematics.
On the playing surface, the midfielder is having a career season in helping the Lions to the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. He has tied his single-season record in goals scored with six, while achieving new heights in the assist department with an additional six. He has tallied three game-winning goals on the season and just recently eclipsed the 50-point mark for his career.
Seven other members of the Sunshine State Conference joined Cutler on the first-team, including Florida Southern’s Johan Jonsson and Givi Kokai, Barry’s Joe Conkleton and Mark Anderson, Tampa’s Ryan Griffin, Lynn’s Kyle Conrad, and Rollins’ Thomas Biddinger.
On the second team, six of the eight members were representatives of the SSC, including two Saint Leo student-athletes. Defenseman Scott Stefanek and forward Jonathan Glenn were both selected to the all-academic squads as each posted excellent academic and athletic statistics.
Stefanek, a senior defender from Burnaby, Canada, has impressed in the classroom since arriving to campus in 2007. A multiple-time President’s Club and SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll member, Stefanek joins the CoSIDA All-District team for the first time in his career. He has a cumulative grade point average of 3.85 and is also expected to graduate in May with a degree in Criminal Justice.
On the field, he has compiled over 1,000 minutes of playing time and has been part of a defense that has allowed just 17 goals in 14 games.
Glenn, on the other hand, also finds his name on the all-academic list for the first time in his career. A Psychology major, the Maloney Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago native has built-up a 3.35 grade point average over his three years at Saint Leo.
Athletically, Glenn’s playing resume is lengthy. He is fifth in program history in goals scored with 41, including seven tallies in 2010. He has compiled nearly 900 minutes of action, and has a shot-on-goal percentage of 70% in 2010.
Men’s Soccer Academic All-America will be announced on Tuesday, November 16.
The trio looks to guide the Lions deep into the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, as they begin their trek later this afternoon when they take on the Florida Tech Panthers from Melbourne, Fla.
