WOMEN’S TENNIS SHUT OUT AGAINST TOP-25 BUCCANEERS

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The injury bug that has plagued the Saint Leo women’s tennis team cost the Lions a chance at an upset over Barry University on Saturday morning as SLU fell 9-0 to the Bucs in Sunshine State Conference action from South Florida.

The match saw the Lions default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, giving the host Bucs an immediate 2-0 lead before the first service.

The closest match of the night was between the No. 1 singles of Angie Werschel and Lina Benkirane.  Werschel easily took game one 6-2, but Benkirane stormed back to take game two 7-6 with a 7-4 win in the tiebreak.  Unfortunately for the Lions, the Buccaneers' top-player rallied for a 10-2 third game tiebreak.

The remainder of the matches all fell easily in favor of the host Buccaneers, with no Lions able to post more than two points in singles competition.

On the doubles side of play, with only two matches up for grabs, the Lions tandem of Benkirane and Shaena Keefe battled with Werschel and Laime Contreras with the Bucs managing to pull out the 8-4 win.

The Lions will return to Saint Leo to host Northwood University (Fla.) on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the SLU Tennis Complex.
