No. 16 SOFTBALL FALLS TO ANGELO STATE IN THE FINAL GAME OF THE COLLEGE CLASSIC

Box Score

SAN ANOTNIO, TX – Despite scoring the first three runs of the ballgame, the No. 16-ranked Saint Leo University softball team (1-4) could not combat the high powered bats of the Angelo State Ramblers, as they scored seven unanswered runs en route to the 9-5 victory over SLU in the final day of the St. Mary's College Classic Saturday.

ASU put pressure on the Lions right from the start placing runners on first and second with nobody out in the first inning. But a double play started by Ali Lamb quickly got the Lions’ starter Kristen Kelly and the Lions’ defense out of the jam.

The Lions used the defensive momentum to their advantage in the second inning scoring three runs. After an Ally Maddox single, Danielle Moreda picked up her first career hit and RBI on double to centerfield. Katrina Muchmore followed that up with her first collegiate home run over the left centerfield fence to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.

Unfortunately, the Lions could not maintain the advantage as Angelo struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Kelly gave way to Urbanik in the third inning but ASU continued to score, connecting on a three-run home run to take a 6-3 lead.

The Ramblers continued to add to the lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning followed by a two-run shot in the sixth to make the score 9-3.

The Lions continued to fight though, scoring two runs in the ninth inning as Amber Martyn and Tiffinee Harvey came home to score on a trio of hits. Still, the comeback effort by the Lions wasn’t enough as they fell for the fourth time in five games.

ASU outhit the Lions 11-to-10, while Saint Leo stranded seven runners on base.

Ashley Urbanik (1-4) was tagged with the loss in the relief appearance, throwing four innings, while surrendering six hits and six runs (three earned).

The Lions have a little bit of a break as they don’t return to the field until February 11 as they take on Webber International in doubleheader action from University Field. Game one is slated to begin at 5:00 with the second game following immediately after.
