SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY BASEBALL TEAM DEFEATS VALDOSTA STATE 4-0 IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION

Saint Leo, Fla. (April 8, 2008) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (23-15) defeated Valdosta State University (25-12-1) by a score of 4-0 on Tuesday night in non-conference action.  The Lions broke a six-game losing streak with the victory.

Saint Leo was led by shortstop Bobby Munoz (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) who went 2-for-3 on the night with a double and one RBI.  Brandin Daniel (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a pair of RBI.  T.J. Alonzo (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) also added his 16th home run of the season.

Three Saint Leo pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout on the mound.  Ryan Clark (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) started the game, throwing three innings of no-hit ball.  Reliever Dale Slimick (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) picked up the win by tossing four innings while scattering three hits.  Eric Nickolaison (Jr., Spring Hill, Fla.) wrapped up the win with his second save of the season, as he threw the final two innings and did not give up a hit.

Lions pitchers also got plenty of help defensively, as Saint Leo turned a total of three double-plays in the win.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Kyle Hobbs (Jr., Dade City, Fla.) led off the frame with a triple.  Munoz followed with an RBI single to score what proved to be the game-winning run.  Alonzo then connected with his team-leading 16th homer of the season to make it 2-0.

Daniel added the insurance runs in the eighth with a two-run blast to right field after Braulio Pardo (Jr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) drew a two-out walk.

Saint Leo will return to Sunshine State Conference action this weekend with a three-game home series versus Barry University.
