SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY LACROSSE TEAM DEFEATS QUEENS UNIVERSITY OF CHARLOTTE 8-7

Charlotte, N.C. (March 8, 2008) Kyle Marceau (So., Concord, N.H.) scored the game-tying goal with 4:05 left, and the game-winning goal with 59-seconds remaining to give the Saint Leo University lacrosse team (4-1) to an 8-7 road win over Queens University of Charlotte (1-5) on Saturday afternoon at the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park.  The victory was the third straight for the Lions.

In addition to Marceau’s two goals, junior Benjamin Brigham (Scituate, Mass.) scored three goals for the Lions.  Ryan Pomponio (Jr., Garden City, N.Y.) also added a goal and assist in the win.  Sophomore goalie DJ Garry (Greenwood, Ind.) made seven saves in net to earn the win and improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Royals took an early lead just 1:57 into the contest, and less than a minute later doubled their advantage.  Saint Leo came to life late in the first quarter, as Pomponio and Brigham scored goals 1:07 apart to tie the game at 2-2 after one quarter.

The second quarter produced two goals, one for each team. Chris Storrie (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) scored first for the Lions and Nick Mezzanotte tied the game for Queens off of an assist from Corey Thomas.

Two goals just eight seconds apart to start the third quarter gave Queens a two goal cushion, 5-3.  Brigham cut the two-goal lead down to one less than a minute after Boyle’s goal, but Boyle tallied his second goal of the game to increase the lead to two again.  Brigham notched a last second goal to put the Lions within one entering the fourth quarter.

Saint Leo’s Nick Bova tied the game at 6-6 with just five minutes remaining in the game, but Randy Jones gave Queens the one-goal lead again with just 4:30 seconds to spare. 25-seconds after Jones’ goal Marceau tied the game again, and the sophomore struck again for the go-ahead and game-winning goal with 59 ticks left on the clock.

The Lions will face No. 3 Limestone College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Gaffney, S.C.
