SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY BASEBALL TEAM DOWNED 12-6 BY ROLLINS COLLEGE IN SSC SERIES OPENER

Saint Leo, Fla. (March 21, 2008) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (21-9, 4-3 SSC) suffered a 12-6 setback in the first game of a three-game SSC series against visiting Rollins College (21-9-1, 3-4 SSC) on Friday night at Southard Stadium.

Saint Leo junior SS Bobby Munoz (Tampa, Fla.) was the only Lions to register a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI.  Both of Munoz’s hits were extra-base hits with a triple and a double on the night.  Rollins DH Bryan Bennett and 1B Stefano Foggi both registered three RBI in the win for the Tars.

Rollins starter, and reigning SSC Pitcher of the Week, Mario Lombardo remained perfect on the season (7-0) with another strong outing.  The senior went 8.0 innings, allowing two runs (both unearned) on just three hits and striking out nine.  Saint Leo starter Carter Clements (Sr., Eustis, Fla.) suffered just his second loss of the year (5-2).

Lombardo got all of the cushion he would need early in the contest, as Rollins built a 9-1 lead in the first three innings.  The senior righty then took control, allowing only one more run while the Tars added a three-run fifth inning to stretch their lead to 12-2.

The Lions plated four runs in the ninth but could rally no further, falling in the series opener.

The same two teams will battle tomorrow in a doubleheader to conclude the SSC series.  Game one opening pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
