SAINT LEO SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST LYNN UNIVERSITY IN CONFERENCE SERIES

Saint Leo, Fla. (March 21, 2008) – The Saint Leo softball team (20-6, 3-0 SSC) swept the Lynn University Fighting Knights (16-20, 3-4 SSC) Friday afternoon at University Field. The Lions won the first game 3-0 behind strong pitching and took care of the Knights 6-1 in the second game.

Ally Maddox (Jr., Brandon, Fla.) led the Lions on the day, going 3-for-6 with a run scored. Ashley Urbanik (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) also went 3-for-6, with a home run and two RBI. Stephanie Discepolo (Jr., Spring Hill, Fla.) finished up her day 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.

In game one, Saint Leo jumped to an early 1-0 lead, as Urbanik grounded out to third base scoring Elysha Agen (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) from third. Discepelo sent a line drive over the left-center field fence for a solo home run to increase the Lions’ lead to 2-0 in the fourth. The Lions added their final run in the bottom of the sixth, as Agen singled home Stroud from third.

Urbanik (14-3) led the Lions to their fourth consecutive shutout, as she went the distance, scattering four hits, and striking out nine.

In the second game, the Lions saw their four game consecutive shutout streak snapped in the second inning. Despite the early deficit, Saint Leo struck back quickly, as Amanda Patrick (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) doubled down the left field line scoring Agen from first base to tie the game 1-1 in the third inning. The Lions exploded for four runs in the fourth inning. Urbanik led the inning off by hitting her fourth home run of the season, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead. After Maddox singled and Monique Dominguez (Sr., LaPuente, Calif.) reached on a throwing error, Shelley Bartlett (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) stepped up to the plate and belted a three-run home run down the left field line to give the Lions a 5-1 lead. The Lions added their final run in the fifth inning, as Urbanik scored on a wild pitch.

Kiki VonHolt (Sr., New Port Richey, Fla.) went the distance for the Lions scattering six hits, giving up one unearned run. VonHolt improved to 6-3 on the season. The Lions’ winning streak now stands at five.

The Lions return to SSC action Tuesday, March 25, as they travel to St. Petersburg to take on the Eckerd College Tritons. The single game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
