SAINT LEO SOFTBALL USES BLISTERING BATS AND PERFECT PITCHING TO HELP SWEEP SALEM INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITTY

Saint Leo, Fla. (February 17, 2008) – The Saint Leo University softball team (4-0) swept the Salem International Tigers (0-2) in doubleheader action Sunday afternoon at University Field. The Lions used hot bats and the first career perfect game by junior pitcher Ashley Urbanik (Riverview, Fla.) to take game one 8-0 in six innings. Game two still featured dominant pitching, but also an offensive explosion which saw the Lions plate 14 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to a 22-1 win in five innings.

The highlight of game one was the dominant pitching of Urbanik who registered her third win of the 2008 season (3-0). Urbanik hurled her first career perfect game and kept Tiger hitters off balance all day as she struck out 13, matching her career-high for strikeouts in a game for the second time in as many starts this season.

Leading the way on the offensive side for the Lions was April Slate (Sr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.), who went 2-for-3 on the day and drove home a run. Urbanik also helped herself out at the dish, as she went 1-3 and also picked up an RBI.  The Lions picked up seven hits in game number one and six of the starting nine for the Lions picked up an RBI.

The Lions took their bats to another level in game two. Saint Leo pounded out 18 hits and pushed 22 runs across the board in a 22-1 victory. Leading the way for the Lions in game number two was Shelley Bartlett (Sr., Sarasota, Fla) who went 2-for-4 with 5 RBI including a grand slam home run over the left field wall in the 14-run fourth inning. Elysha Agen (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) went 3-for-5 at the plate with 5 RBI, including a pair of doubles.  Amanda Patrick (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI in the Lions victory. Slate used her speed to her advantage in the twin bill as she went 3-for-4 in the second half of the DH, as she scored three times and picked up an RBI. Kasey Postupack (Fr., Seminole, Fla. ) also picked up two hits in game number two, scoring twice and driving in a run.

On the hill for the Lions was Kiki VonHolt (Sr., New Port Richey, Fla. ) who threw four very strong innings in her first win of the 2008 season (1-0). VonHolt tossed four scoreless innings and gave up only one hit.

The Lions return to action Tuesday, February 19 for a home doubleheader against Webber International. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
