SAINT LEO BASEBALL TEAM FALLS 6-0 TO NO. 3 RANKED UNIVERSITY OF TAMPA IN SSC SERIES OPENER

Tampa, Fla. (April 27, 2007) – The Saint Leo baseball team (26-23, 10-12 SSC) fell 6-0 on the road to the No. 3 ranked University of Tampa Spartans (37-9, 15-4 SSC) on Friday night at UT Baseball Field.

Saint Leo 2B Jorge Burgos (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) was 2-for-3, while DH Yunior Tabares (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) was 2-for-4, as they were the only two Lions to register multiple-hit games.  The Lions were unable to solve Tampa starting left-hander Levin Ferguson who went eight strong innings and allowed just five singles while striking out eight to improve to 9-2.

The game was scoreless in the fifth when the Spartans scored three runs to open up a 3-0 lead.  UT 1B Nolan Brannon got things started with a double, which was followed by three consecutive singles.

The third-ranked Spartans then added to their lead in the sixth when Roberto Mena connected on the first of two home runs with a two-run shot to left-center.  Mena added an insurance run with a solo homer in the eighth.

Saint Leo starter Charlie Blume (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) was saddled with the loss, as he went six innings and allowed five runs on seven hits to fall to 2-5 on the year.

The two teams will wrap up their Sunshine State Conference series tomorrow with a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.  Tampa will provide live statistics for both games of the doubleheader.
