SAINT LEO SOFTBALL TEAM CONCLUDES REGULAR SEASON WITH SWEEP OF VISITING ROLLINS COLLEGE IN SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

Saint Leo, Fla. (April 25, 2007) – Senior left fielder Hayley Mallory (Plant City, Fla.) went 2-for-6 and drove in game-winning runs in both contests, as the Saint Leo University softball team (33-20, 15-9 SSC) swept the Rollins College Tars (35-13, 10-8 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader on Wednesday night.

The Lions concluded their regular season on a six-game winning streak, as they swept the Tars for their second consecutive SSC series sweep.  SLU won game one 2-0 before wrapping up the series sweep with a 1-0 win in game two.

Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) was the winning pitcher in both contests, improving to 24-11 on the season.  She tossed a complete-game two-hitter in game one, as the Lions secured at least the series win.  She then came on in relief of Kiki VonHolt (Jr., New Port Richey, Fla.) to work the final three innings in a combined shutout.  SS Ali Flynn (Sr., Miami, Fla.) was also a combined 3-for-6 on the evening.

The Lions overcame an 11-strikeout performance by Rollins starter Nicole Anderson (23-10) in game one.  Mallory delivered what proved to be the game-winning run with an RBI triple after April Slate (Jr., Land O’Lakes, Fla.) had led off the inning with a bunt single and then stole second and third base.  Christina Van Tassel (Sr., Valparaiso, Fla.) then singled in Brunt with an insurance run in the sixth.

Mallory again provided the only run of game two with her second RBI triple of the night.  Slate beat out the throw on an infield single with two outs and then raced home on the triple to right center by Mallory for the go-ahead run.

Prior to game two, Saint Leo’s four seniors (Van Tassel, Mallory, Flynn and Erin Brunt) were honored on Senior Night.  In addition, student assistant coach Mike Farrant was recognized along with the senior players.
