SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY BASEBALL TEAM EDGES BARRY UNIVERSITY 6-5 IN SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE SERIES OPENER

Miami Shores, Fla. (April 20, 2007) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (25-20, 10-9 SSC) edged Barry University (25-21-1, 7-9 SSC) by a 6-5 scoreline in the opening game of a three-game Sunshine State Conference series on Friday evening at Barry’s Feinbloom Field.

Eric Spicer (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while starting left-hander Ryan Clark (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) improved to 9-2 with the victory for the Lions.

Barry took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, but the Lions rallied and scored three runs in the fifth and take a 3-2 lead.  Jerry Gonzalez (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) delivered an RBI single in the inning, and Spicer completed the scoring with a two-run single.

The Lions scored three more runs in the eighth to open a 6-2 advantage, benefiting from Bucs defensive miscues.  Barry closed to within a run with three runs in the bottom half of the inning but could rally no further, as Eric Nickolaison (So., Spring Hill, Fla.) picked up his second save of the year.

The same two teams will meet tomorrow in a doubleheader at Feinbloom Field.  Game one is scheduled to begin at noon.
