Saint Leo, Fla. (April 14, 2007) – The Saint Leo University softball team (27-19, 9-8 SSC) was swept in a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader by visiting Barry University (36-11, 10-4 SSC) on Saturday afternoon at University Field.
The first game was a 10-inning affair with Barry eventually winning 1-0, and the Bucs completed the doubleheader sweep with a 5-1 victory in game two.
In a game one pitchers duel, Barry starter Liz Bennett outlasted Saint Leo starter Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.). Bennett (15-2) tossed a complete-game shutout and allowed just eight hits while striking out 11. Urbanik (18-10) was the hard luck loser despite a second consecutive 10-inning complete-game performance. She allowed the one run on nine hits.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the Bucs broke a 0-0 deadlock with a run in the top of the fifth inning. The visitors then added a run in the sixth before taking a 5-0 lead with a three-run top of the seventh.
The Lions scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Ally Maddox (So., Brandon, Fla.) connected on her team-leading sixth home run.
The same two teams will meet tomorrow in a single game at Saint Leo’s University Field. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. starting time.
