SAINT LEO SOFTBALL TEAM FALLS 1-0 TO NO. 7 FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY IN 10 INNINGS

Saint Leo, Fla. (April 11, 2007) - The Saint Leo University softball team (27-17) fell 1-0 to visiting No. 7 Florida Gulf Coast University (50-4) in 10 innings on Wednesday night.  The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled with the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth due to severe weather.

The opening contest saw neither team able to solve their opponents' starting pitcher.  FGCU's Rachael Edinger picked up the win to remain perfect on the year (24-0), while Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) was the hard luck loser for the Lions (18-9).

The winning run was scored in the top of the 10th inning, as Jessica Gary was placed on second base as part of the international tie-breaker.  Gary was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Roz Tyre.  She then scored the winning run on a single by Rachel Homan.

The Lions attempted to rally in the bottom of the inning with Christina Van Tassel (Sr., Valparaiso, Fla.) on second base.  Ally Maddox (So., Brandon, Fla.) moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt but Van Tassel was left stranded, as the inning ended with a strikeout and a foul out.

The second game was underway and tied in the bottom of the fourth inning when it was cancelled due to severe weather.

Saint Leo returns to Sunshine State Conference play this weekend when Barry University visits University Field.  The teams will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) with a single game on Sunday (1:00 p.m.).
