SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY BASEBALL TEAM SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH ROLLINS COLLEGE TO WIN WEEKEND SERIES

Winter Park, Fla. (March 31, 2007) – The Saint Leo University baseball team (20-16, 5-7 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader at Rollins College (21-15, 6-6 SSC) on Saturday to take two out of three in the weekend series with the Tars.  The Lions were edged 7-5 in game one but won game two 8-1 to clinch their first SSC series win of 2007.

Ricky Nolan (Jr., Seminole, Fla.), Sean VanGuilder (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) and Eric Spicer (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) each had four hits and three RBI on the afternoon to lead the Lions to the split and the series win.

Game One was a back-and-forth affair, as the teams traded leads throughout the entire game. Rollins went ahead early with a first inning run after Rollins third baseman Gary Martoccio led off with a double and came around to score on a groundout by left fielder Mike Crane.

Saint Leo came back with three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run single by Nolan. The Tars scored one in the fourth on an RBI single by More to narrow the lead to one, and they went ahead on a two-run pinch hit single by Chase in the sixth. The Lions scored two in the seventh to regain the lead, but a three-run blast over the center field wall by Eugene Martinez in the eighth put Rollins up for good.

Saint Leo starter Carter Clements (2-5) pitched all seven innings for the complete game win in the nightcap, allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out seven.

The Lions scored first in Game Two, putting one run on the board in the second inning on a balk by Rollins starter Danny Clark. Saint Leo added four more in the fourth and three in the fifth, breaking out to an 8-0 lead.  Van Guilder highlighted the rally with a two-run home run in the fifth.

Saint Leo will head to Lakeland on Tuesday to face Florida Southern College in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
