SAINT LEO UNIVERSTY SOFTBALL TEAM FALLS TO DELTA STATE AND VALDOSTA STATE AT LADY BLAZER SPRING CLASSIC

Valdosta, Ga. (February 4, 2007) – The Saint Leo University softball team (1-3) lost a pair of games in the final day of action at the Valdosta State Lady Blazer Spring Classic on Sunday.  The Lions fell 5-4 to both Delta State University and Valdosta State University.

SLU senior Christina Van Tassel (Valparaiso, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored against Delta State, including a home run and a double.  Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) also contributed a three-run home run.  Erin Brunt (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) added a two-run homer of her own, as she went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs against Valdosta State.

In the early game, Delta State opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning.  The Lions tied the score in the fourth when Van Tassel led off the inning with a solo home run.

The Lady Statesmen regained their lead in the fifth, as they scored four runs on a two-run double and a two-run homer.  SLU closed to within one when Urbanik connected on her three-run home run, but could not rally any further despite having runners at second and third in the top of the seventh inning.

The Lions’ bid to earn a split of games for the second straight day came up just short, as Valdosta State came from behind to win 5-4 in the second game of the day.  The Blazers got a walk-off two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Lions for the second straight day.

Saint Leo had trailed early on after Valdosta State scored three runs in the first.  The Lions manufactured single runs in both the second and third innings before Brunt delivered her two-run homer to give Saint Leo the 4-3 advantage.  However, for the second consecutive day, the Blazers scored runs late to secure the win.

Saint Leo returns to action next Sunday when the Lions travel to Ft. Myers, Fla. to face Florida Gulf Coast University.  The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
