Saint Leo, Fla. (February 3, 2007) – The Saint Leo women’s basketball team (6-15, 3-7 SSC) edged visiting Palm Beach Atlantic University (4-18) by a score of 67-63 on Saturday in non-conference action at the Bowman Center.
A trio of Lions scored in double figures, as both Roni Carithers (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) and Melissa Guerero (So., Trinidad & Tobago) scored 14 points. Dominique Daniels (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) added her first career double-double with a career-high 10 points and a career- and game-high 10 rebounds.
After a close start to the game, which featured 10 lead changes in the opening 11:11, Saint Leo used a 17-7 run to open the largest lead of the game at nine points with 2:07 left in the first half. The Lions eventually led by seven at the break.
In the second half, PBA chipped away at the deficit and eventually took a one-point lead with 9:21 left to play. With the score tied 57-57, SLU put together a key 6-0 spurt to take the lead for good. The Lions then went 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the closing minutes to secure the win.
Saint Leo returns to Sunshine State Conference play this Wednesday with a trip to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to face Nova Southeastern University. Opening tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
