Valdosta, Ga. (February 3, 2007) – The Saint Leo University softball team (1-1) split a pair of games on the opening day of the 2007 season on Saturday in Valdosta, Ga. The Lions defeated Delta State University 5-4 in the early game, and then fell 7-4 to Valdosta State in the late game.
Ally Maddox (So., Brandon, Fla.) went 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored in the opener versus DSU. Ashley Urbanik (So., Riverview, Fla.) was also 2-for-3 in the contest with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Urbanik also threw a complete-game, striking out eight en route to the win over the Stateswomen.
The Lions fell behind 2-0 but cut the deficit in half with a run in the fifth on a leadoff homer by Maddox. Saint Leo then put together a four-run sixth, highlighted by a two-run double from Urbanik and a two-run homer by Maddox.
In the second half of the doubleheader, Valdosta State was ahead 4-0 when senior Erin Brunt (Clearwater, Fla.) hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 4-4. However, VSU added three runs late in the game to seal the victory.
Saint Leo will face Delta State and Valdosta State again tomorrow with game scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
