SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY MEN’S SOCCER TEAM SHARES THE POINTS WITH NOVA SOUTHEASTERN AFTER 2-2 SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE DRAW

Saint Leo, Fla. (September 30, 2006) – The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (6-4-1, 2-1-1 SSC) played to a 2-2 double-overtime draw with visiting Nova Southeastern University (6-3-1, 2-0-1 SSC) on Saturday night in a Sunshine State Conference match at University Field.

Saint Leo senior forward Asmir Pervan (Simmern, Germany) scored a goal for the third straight match, while Luis Quintero (Jr., Cape Coral, Fla.) netted his fifth goal of the campaign.  However, NSU rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits to split the points in the conference standings.

Pervan’s 11th goal of the season was scored in the 29th minute, when he took a through ball from Brandon Whitsett (So., Palm Harbor, Fla.) and slotted a shot beyond NSU goalkeeper Steven Deering.  The Lions would take the lead into the half-time locker room.

In the second half, the Sharks pulled level through Anton Seidlitzki in the 66th minute but Saint Leo was again on top when a brilliant individual effort by Quintero led to the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute.

As regulation time wound down, it appeared the Lions would hold on for their third straight conference win.  However, Seidlitzki slid a pass across the face of goal in the 85th minute which was slotted home by Eric Naples for the game-tying goal.

In the overtime period, both sides had chances to score the winner but neither could score sending each home with a single conference point.

Saint Leo will remain at home for a non-conference match against Trinity College of Florida on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.  The Lions next SSC match will be at Florida Tech on October 7 at Florida Tech (4:00 p.m.).
