BETHEL HANDS SAINT LEO MEN’S SOCCER TEAM FIRST DEFEAT 2-1 IN OT

Saint Leo, Fla. (September 1, 2006) - Bethel College (TN) posted a 2-1 men's soccer victory in overtime Friday night over Saint Leo University to remain unbeaten after two matches. Both wins by the NAIA school came over Division II opponents. The Lions fell for the first time this season after opening with a pair of wins.

Bethel dented the scoreboard first on a penalty kick with 2:38 remaining in the first half. After Sean Fraser's first attempt hit the far post, the Wildcat reserve followed up on the rebound to put his team ahead.

Despite having to play a man down over the last 36 minutes of action, Saint Leo was able to tie the match and send it into overtime. Reserve forward Brandon Whitsett (Jr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) sent a long ball to the head of the box, which All-America forward Asmir Pervan (Sr., Simmern, Germany) was able to outfight two Bethel defenders for posssession.

Pervan beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to knot the score in the 88th minute.

However, Bethel regrouped and scored the winning goal 4:14 into the first overtime period on a 10-yard effort from reserve forward Javier Figueroa.

The Lions outshot Bethel 14-6 and had eight corner kicks to two for the visitors.

Saint Leo returns to action Sunday in Pensacola against the University of West Florida (4:00 p.m. ET).
