NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Saint Leo women's cross country team earned regional recognition on Monday as they were preseason ranked eighth in the south region according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Lions, who welcome in eight freshmen student-athletes to the 2012 squad, are just three days away from the start of their regular season. Also rejoining the team is 2010 All-Sunshine State Conference runner Andrea Maxwell as she returns to the group after an injury plagued 2011.

In 2011, the Lions saw their first-ever individual runner advance to the NCAA National Championships, while posting an impressive team score in the NCAA South Region run.

In 2012, the team will compete in six regular season meets, while also playing host to their first home event in five seasons.

Regions in DII are determined by conference affiliation. Many from the Central and South Central regions switched regions for the 2012 season. Most notably, the MIAA went from the South Central to Central regions and the RMAC was switched to the South Central region from the Central.

The NCAA Division II Regional Championships will be held on Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
