Saint Leo Hosts Second Annual 'Honest Abe' 5K

SAINT LEO, Fla. – 102 competitors took part in Saint Leo University's second annual 'Honest Abe' 5K, last Saturday morning from Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Presented by Saint Leo University and benefiting the Boys Scouts of America, the race began at the American Consulting Engineers building of Wesley Chapel, and brought participants through 3.1 miles of course to the finish line.

Lions' cross country runner Brian Haynes took home first place as he finished with a time of 17:03, running at a five-minute mile pace. The time was a two-minute improvement over the 2011 edition.

Head Coach Melissa Miller-Mangen finished as the top female finisher as she clocked in with a time of 18:24.

Eric Dirth (17:35), who finished runner-up, closed his morning with a time 55 seconds faster than last year's race. 

Women's cross country runner Andrea Maxwell is back to full strength and crossed the finish line at 19:54, 20 seconds faster than last year. Melissa Goldstein put the finishing touches on the run with a personal best 5K finish, and Jillian Browne was also a minute fast than last year's race as she finished 13th.  

Sebastian Hernandez of Lakeland closed the run as the top non student-athlete finisher with a time of 18:56. Alyssa Turner of Wesley Chapel took home the honors on the women's side with a finishing time of 21:46.

Kent Reiber, cross country assistant coach, fourth-place finisher, and Eagle Scout stated, "Saint Leo University has several Eagle Scouts on faculty and staff and, as an Eagle Scout myself, it was great to see the outpouring of support from our athletes and the school. Our athletes ran very well and this continued relationship will help develop the youth of today into the leaders of tomorrow."
