Volleyball falls to Lynn in nail-biting five-set match

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team dropped a nail-biter in Boca Raton, Fla., on Friday night to Lynn, 3-2; 20-25, 25-20, 15-25, 25-20, 13-15, in Sunshine State Conference action.

It was a very even match through and through. Saint Leo hit .218, while Lynn hit .219. The Fighting Knights tallied 10 team blocks, while Saint Leo tallied eight. Saint Leo dished out four aces, while Lynn was credited with five. Ultimately, Lynn put down 69 kills to the Lions' 56.

Saint Leo saw Hope Lemon put down 12 kills to lead the team, and added eight digs. Britt Sederholm added 11 kills and eight digs. Both Annabella Arcari and Avery Bradshaw tallied nine kills, and only committed one hitting error a piece.

Defensively, Jamee Townsend led the match with 34 digs, while Jenya Kruglova added 10. Arcari tallied four blocks in the match.

Anna Garrett tallied 24 assists in the final three sets, while Maddy Powell dished out 22 over the first three.

Lynn and Saint Leo battled back and forth as the first set went to the Fighting Knights following a 14 kill performance that was able to stave off the Lions.

In the second, Saint Leo put down just 12 kills but was quite effective as they hit .323 as a team. While Lynn put down 15 kills, they also committed seven errors.

The Fighting Knights dominated in the third and jumped out to an 18-4 lead. The Lions were able to gain momentum, finishing the game with 11-7 run.

In the fourth, the Lions built off their momentum and used a five-point cushion to keep the Fighting Knights at bay.

The final set went for the home team, who jumped to a 9-6 lead. However, Saint Leo won three-straight points to tie it at 9-all. It continued to go back and forth until the match was tied at 13-13. Lynn used one of their timeouts, and then closed out the match by rattling off two points to take the match.

Saint Leo is now 18-9, 10-3 in the SCC. They head to Barry on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match.
