Volleyball takes five-set battle from UNA

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team won 3-2; 20-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-22, 18-16 in a battle against North Alabama in their final match of the 2016 South Region Crossover at the Orlando Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

In the first set, the Lions and UNA battle back and forth, but UNA got the upper hand as they put down 15 kills on .227 hitting. The Lions were able to scoop up 18 digs, but they only recorded nine kills of their own. Hope Lemon led the way with three kills and two service aces in the set. Jamee Townsend recorded seven digs in the first set alone.

The second set was a whole different ball game for the Lions as they put down 12 kills, and sided out at a clip of 73-percent. Townsend added 11 more digs, while Lemon tallied four kills in the set and another ace. The Lions blocking picked up as they tallied six team blocks in the set, including four by freshman Annabella Arcari, who tallied a solo block as well.

UNA took it to the Lions offensively in the third set, putting down 15 kills on a clip of .343 as a team. Victoria Omoregie was a bright spot for Saint Leo, as the freshman put down four kills on a clip of .364. Following a set where the tallied six team blocks, Saint Leo was unable to record a block in the third.

The Lions battled in the fourth, putting down 19 kills on an impressive .298 clip, to tie it up at 2-2. The Lions scooped up 28 digs in the set, 10 coming from Townsend, who registered five in a single rally. Avery Bradshaw came into the set, putting five kills on a clip of .444. Anna Garrett dished out 15 assists.

In a hard-fought fifth set, Saint Leo trailed 6-2 to open the set, but with grit and determination, they fought back. The Lions put down 10 kills in the final set and added one service ace and three blocks to take the win.

Lemon finished with just her second double-double of the season, putting down 14 kills and scooping up 13 digs. She also added a season-high six service aces and two blocks. Fellow senior Katie Adamson had one of her best games of the season, putting down a career-high 11 kills on a clip of .429, adding a team-high six blocks and three digs. Following the senior success, Townsend tied her recently set career high with 36 digs and added five assists. Freshman Victoria Omoregie added 10 kills, while Britt Sederholm scooped up 15 digs.

The Lions return home on Tuesday, Nov. 18 to take on Tampa in an SSC match-up at 7 p.m. in the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
