Volleyball's Townsend snags second SSC weekly honor

SAINT LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo volleyball senior Jamee Townsend was named the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the Conference office on Monday for her performances against Tampa and Florida Southern.

Townsend averaged 5.375 digs per set this weekend as she helped the Lions split the toughest road trip of the SSC season as the Lions faced the conference's two ranked opponents.

On Friday evening, Townsend scooped up 24 digs in the four-set battle with No. 22 Florida Southern, which led the match.

Then in the Lions upset win, and just the second win over No. 16 UT in program history, Townsend tallied a match-best 19 digs and helped ground the Lions' serve receive that led the Lions to a 62-percent side out completion. Townsend added six assists over the weekend as well. Townsend currently leads the SSC in digs per set at 5.14.

This is Townsend's second honor of the season and the second of her career. 

The Saint Leo volleyball team opens up at home on Friday, Sept. 23, as the Lions host SSC foe Rollins at 7:00 p.m.
