Lions Collect Tough SSC Win Over Eckerd; Improve to 12-5

SAINT LEO, Fla. – In their fourth Sunshine State Conference game of the 2013 season, the Saint Leo volleyball team collected a significant road 3-1 victory over the Eckerd College Tritons, Wednesday evening from the McArthur Center in St. Petersburg. The win improved their overall record to 12-5 on the season.

Each set was a battle for both teams in the mid-week match, forcing the Lions to come from behind in the first set and take home a 27-25 win. The second set of the evening featured a similar series of events, as Eckerd rallied from a 24-22 deficit to force a 27-25 win.

With the score tied at 1-1, the Tritons and Lions returned to set three and battled again. After taking a lead early on, Saint Leo never looked back, and the Lions were able to lead for most of the set and cruise to a 25-19 win.

Heading into the fourth set of the night with a 2-1 lead, the Lions capitalized on offense and blasted home a 25-22 set win to take home the match.

It was junior Tawni Warren who dominated the court for the Lions in the win, blasting 19 kills and collecting 19 digs. In addition to her .317 hitting percentage, she also tallied one assists and two service aces.  Warren led both teams in kills on the night.

In addition to Warren's offensive effort, junior Lauren Campbell collected 15 kills, while junior Alexa Griffith-Hardy and senior Jordan Sisson tallied 11 and ten kills, respectively.

Defensively, junior Yaidimar Santiago led both teams in digs, with 24.

Senior setter Jaclyn Mailoto, who ranks seventh in the nation for NCAA Division II assists per set, notched an astounding 56 assists in the effort, improving her season total to 630 assists.

The Lions will return to action on Friday, October 11 when they host the visiting Barry University Buccaneers. The match is slated to begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.
