LAKELAND, Fla. – After a successful 3-1 weekend at the Saint Leo Classic tournament, the Lions fell in four sets ( 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23) to the Florida Southern Mocs in opening Sunshine State Conference action, Tuesday evening at the Mocs' home gym.
It was a tough match for the Lions as the Mocs came out fighting, taking the first set by a score of 25-19 and holding the Lions to a less than .100 hitting percentage. Despite the Lions regaining their footing to take home the second set, the Mocs closed out the match by capturing sets three and four.
Despite the Mocs' strong defense and offense, three Lions collected double digit kills in the effort. Senior middle blocker Meghan Donovan and freshman standout Hope Lemon led the group with 13 kills each, followed by sophomore Jillian Stolzenburg, who totaled 11 for the evening.
In addition to the offense effort, five Lions earned double-digit digs; the first for the season. Junior libero Yaidimar Santiago dominated the court, collecting 21 digs on the day, while Lauren Campbell (18), Jaclyn Mailoto (16), Tawni Warren (13), and Molly Alexander (12) followed closely behind.
Despite the loss, Saint Leo tallied more digs and kills than the Mocs' team.
The Lions will return to the court on Sunday, Sep. 29 when they take on the Webber Warriors at home. The match is slated to begin at 2 pm.
