SAINT LEO, Fla. – After splitting a pair of matches in the first day of the Saint Leo Classic volleyball tournament, the Lions took home day two of action by defeating the Columbus State Cougars and the Cedarville Yellowjackets.
The Lions took the court against their new regional foe, the Columbus State University Cougars, in their afternoon game during the tournament on Saturday. Saint Leo defeated the one-year program in a four set match (25-9, 22-25, 25-13, 25-12). Freshman Hope Lemon and junior Lauren Campbell led the Lions in scoring during the match, collecting 16 and 14 digs respectively. The pair were the only Lions who collected double-digit digs in the contest. In aiding her teammates, Jaclyn Mailoto collected 44 assists, while Yaidimar Santiago notched 13 digs.
In the final game of the tournament, the Lions took the court against the visiting Cedarville Yellowjackets and pounded home the match after three sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-21). In addition to Mailoto's 35 assists in the contest, Campbell (13) and Tawni Warren (12) led the team in kills. Defensively, Santiago and Campbell held down the court with 19 and 10 digs, respectively. The Lions hit for .216 in the match,
The Lions will return to the court on Tuesday, September 24, when they travel to Lakeland, Fla. to face the Florida Southern Mocs in their first conference bout. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m.
