BOCA RATON, Fla. – In the first day of competition at the Courtyard Boca Raton Invitational tournament, the Saint Leo volleyball team swept the competition, defeating the Daemen College Wildcats by a score of 3-1, just before taking a three-set win over the Seton Hill Griffins.
The day began with an 11 a.m. match against Daemen College, whom the Lions defeated in four sets (25-14, 25-17, 21-25, 25-11). It was senior Meghan Donovan who led the team in kills for the match, tallying 11 and earning a .350 kill percentage. In addition, sophomore Jillian Stolzenburg and juniors Tawni Warren and Lauren Campbell each collected ten kills apiece, while senior setter Jaclyn Mailoto tallied 40 assists in the contest. On the defensive side of the ball, both Warren and junior-transfer Yaidimar Santiago led the team with nine digs each.
After collecting a win over the Wildcats, Saint Leo prepared themselves for a match against Seton Hill. The Lions were able to build off of the momentum from the first win, and the second victory of the day came in just three sets (25-20, 25-21, 25-11). After a notable performance in the first match, it was Stolzenburg who led the team in kills, collecting 11. Campbell and Warren followed closely behind, notching nine and eight kills, respectively. Once again, Santiago put on a defensive performance by collecting 13 kills, while Mailoto notched 36 assists in the win.
Saint Leo hopes to continue the momentum tomorrow when they take on both UPR-Mayaguez and Fort Valley State in the last day of the Courtyard Boca Raton Invitational tournament. The Lions' first match of the day is set for 9 a.m.
