Lions Fall to Eckerd in Four-Set Conference Matchup

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team (10-14, 2-10 SSC) fell to the visiting Eckerd College Tritons (19-7, 10-2 SSC) by a score of 3-1 (26-24, 25-16, 23-25, 25-21), Saturday afternoon from the Lions' home court. The victory notched the Tritons' eighth-straight win.

The first set beThe back and forth frame featured numerous Eckerd leads, and the Lions had no chances to gain any momentum, as they were never able to go ahead by more than two points. After numerous attempts by the Lions to win the first set, the Tritons walked away with the 26-24 victory.

The Tritons made quick work of the Lions during the second set, ending with a score of 25-16.  During the set, the Lions were never able to score more than three points in a row. The Tritons finished the set with 16 kills and 13 digs, while the Lions collected 10 digs and 9 kills.

After a short break, the third set began with a point by Saint Leo, and the momentum built from there for the Lions. At one point during the match, the Lions led by as much as five points, yet the Tritons refused to accept defeat. From the 15-point mark and forward, the Lions and Tritons battled each other until the end of the match, when the Lions took the lead and ended the set, 25-23. 

The visiting Tritons began the fourth set with a point in their favor, but it was back and forth volleyball from there on out. With neither team giving in, the deficit was never more than two points until the Tritons took the lead at 14 points and never looked back, winning the set 25-21.

Despite the loss, junior Jordan Sisson notched 10 kills in the effort, while Tawni Warren, Molly Alexander, and Jaclyn Mailoto collected 15, 13, and 12 digs, respectively. As a team, the Lions had 13 team blocks, 49 digs and 44 kills, while the Tritons finished with an attacking percentage of .226, collecting 53 digs and 62 kills. 

Eckerd's Olivia Fraser and Ali McAlvany led the Tritons in attacking as they collected 15 and 14 kills, respectively, while Kaleigh Humphrey and Emily Schadow both notched double-digit digs.

Saint Leo will take the court again on Friday, Nov. 9 as they battle the visiting Rollins College Tars. The match is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
