SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Lions volleyball team dropped a regular season conference matchup to the visiting No. 7 University of Tampa Spartans by a score of 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-12), Friday evening from the Saint Leo University Marion Bowman Activities Center.
The first set of the match began with a point by the Lions (10-13, 2-9 SSC), followed by four straight points by the University of Tampa (22-3, 11-0 SSC). After a grueling set that featured 19 Tampa kills and 13 digs by the Lions, the Spartans took the set by a score of 25-20.
At the beginning of the second set, the Lions again took the first point, only to be countered by five straight points by the Spartans. During the set, the Lions were never able to score more than two points in a row, while the Spartans delivered a five-point run, a four-point run, and a three-point run during their first 14 points alone, winning the set 25-16. Although the Spartans controlled the set, both teams had 13 kills and 13 assists in the frame, and Saint Leo senior Sami Vierk collected seven kills.
After a short break, the third set featured yet another first point by the Lions, and as usual, the Spartans answered back with three back-to-back points. After four three-point runs and one six-point run, the Spartans quickly took the third and final set by a score of 25-12.
Despite the loss, junior Molly Alexander notched 10 digs, while senior Sami Vierk collected 11 kills in the effort. As a team, the Lions had 31 digs and 29 kills, while the Spartans finished with 37 digs and 46 kills.
Danielle Selkridge, who earned AVCA National Player of the week accolades this week, led the Spartans attack with her numerous contributions. With an attack percentage of .556, Selkridge collected 15 kills, and two digs in the effort.
Saint Leo looks to rebound when they take on the Eckerd College Tritons on Saturday, Nov. 3 from the Lions' home court. The match is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
