MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team was unable to get the second half of its Sunshine State Conference schedule started on a good note as the Lions dropped their Saturday match to Barry University 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-16) in south Florida.
It was a match where the Lions (10-11, 2-7 SSC) could not keep the momentum of an early-set victory to earn the conference win after a two-week SSC layoff. The host Buccaneers (12-11, 4-6 SSC) held off a furious rally by the Lions in the second set where Saint Leo nearly erased a 23-17 deficit; and then deflated the Lions when they rallied from an early hole in set three to win 26-24.
The Buccaneers hit .268, while the Lions had a .255 attack rate. Barry out-blocked Saint Leo, 9-4, and had 10 aces to the Lions' five.
Despite the loss, Saint Leo still saw three of its own hit in double digits led by Meghan Donovan's 14-kill, .414 hitting percentage evening. Tawni Warren also notched 14 kills and Tayler Hegg had the first highlight game of her career with 10 successful attacks.
Jayla Trombley finished with 14 kills, 11 digs and three aces as she helped the Bucs to the victory. In addition, Ashley Carrero and Tania Torres each notched 12 kills for Barry.
Barry sweeps this season's series after posting a 3-1 win at the Bowman Center back in late September.
The Lions look to rebound when they travel to Boca Raton and take on Lynn University in a rescheduled game on Sunday afternoon. The Lions and Fighting Knights get underway at 2 p.m. at Glenview Prep School.
