Volleyball Wins Third Straight With Win Over St. Francis

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University volleyball team (9-8, 2-6 SSC) won their third match in a row as they topped the University of St. Francis (27-6) in non-conference action on Tuesday night by a score of three sets to one.  

St. Francis got off to a hot start in the opening set and quickly took leads of 9-3 and 17-9. At one point down 24-18, the Lions cut the deficit to 24-21 before being put away by the Saints 25-21. St. Francis had 15 kills in the set compared to the Lions had 13, six of which came from Lauren Campbell.

The Lions battled back in the second set, winning by a score or 27-25 in a back and forth game. Neither team ever had more than a three point lead in a game that saw nine ties and two lead changes. The Saints took their first lead of the game, 22-21, on an attack from Jazzmyne Robbins, but the Lions countered by winning the next three points to retake the lead 24-22.  After two consecutive Saints' points, a Megan Donovan spike gave the Lions and 25-24 lead and put them on the verge of winning the set. The Lions were able to cap off the set 27-25 with an attack from Sami Vierk.

The Lions jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the third set and never turned back. At one point during the 25-12 set win, the Lions won 11 of 12 points.

In the fourth set the Lions picked up right where they left off in the third, jumping out to an 11-3 lead. The Saints did not fold though, as they picked up the next four straight points to cut their deficit to 11-7. From that point on it was all Lions. Saint Leo went on a surge and won seven of the next 10 points to take a 22-12 lead. Heather Martin capped off the fourth set win and match victory for the Lions with a thunderous spike that erupted the Bowman Center. 

Abby Lovell led the Lions with 41 assists, while Campbell led the team with 12 kills. Reigning Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week Molly Alexander finished the night with 28 digs. Robbins led all Saints with 10 kills. 

The Lions get back in action again on Friday, Oct 19 with games against Christian Brothers and Valdosta State. Game times are set for 12:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.
