SAINT LEO, Fla. – Led by 13 kills from sophomore Lauren Campbell, the Saint Leo volleyball team (8-8, 2-6 SSC) swept the Nova Southeastern University Sharks (4-17, 1-7 SSC) 3-0, Saturday afternoon from the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The host Lions took the match by the scores of 25-18, 25-18, and 25-15.
The SSC tilt saw the Lions hit .291 for the contest, with four players striking for seven or more kills. Campbell also collected double-double as she added 11 digs. Molly Alexander also registered a game-high 18 digs in the win.
A close contest in the first set, Saint Leo took advantage of a Sharks' service error as the 14-14 match turned drastically in favor of the Lions. Saint Leo, led by three Megan Donovan kills, rallied-off 11 of the next 15 points to take the opening set.
A mirror image of the first set, the Lions and NSU traded blows to another 14-14 tie. This time it was the swing of Jordan Sission who ignited a late rally as her kill propelled Saint Leo to scoring 11 of the next 15 points. Jaclyn Mailoto finished-off Nova Southeastern with a service ace, one of two on the game.
Saint Leo left no doubt in the third set as they scooted out to a 20-10 lead. Campbell, Sission, and Tawni Warren did the majority of the damage in the stretch as they combined for nine kills. Seeing NSU begin to make a late charge, the Lions stopped the visitors in their tracks as they closed the set and match with four consecutive points.
In total, Saint Leo registered six blocks while out-digging the Sharks, 55-42. The team also posted five service aces.
It's the team's second consecutive SSC win, and fourth shutout of the year.
Saint Leo will return to action on Tuesday, October 16, when they host St. Francis in non-region action. First serve is set for 7 p.m. from the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
