Lions Stopped Short by Tars in SSC Battle

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team is still searching for that right mix of luck and execution as the Lions had their fair share of chances, but ultimately fell to the host Rollins College Tars in straight sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

In Saturday's opening set, the frame saw 11 ties and six lead changes.  After a four-all tie, Saint Leo (6-7, 0-6 SSC) took the lead, but was slowly relinquished after the Tars (9-8, 3-3 SSC) went on a 5-1 run to take a 14-13 lead.  The score bounced back and forth similar to last night's game against Florida Tech, and again, the opponents rallied to come from a three-point deficit and tie the score at 21-all on another kill.  Rollins took the lead on a kill from Camille Indest and finished the set on a 3-1 run as Saint Leo was again unable to close out a set.

In the following set, Rollins led from start to finish, hitting a .343 as a team and held Saint Leo to a .136 hitting percentage.

In the final set of the match, the Lions held control for nearly the entire game, but Rollins tied the score at 22.  Saint Leo regained the lead, but it would be short-lived as back-to-back errors by the Lions would give Rollins the advantage and match point.  Another Lions' error would hand the Tars the win and match.

A trio of Lions led the Saint Leo offense as Lauren Campbell registered 11 kills, while Meghan Donovan and Sami Vierk each added 10.  Libero Molly Alexander chipped in with 14 digs.

Megan Hodges led the Tars' offense with 12 kills, to go along with two digs and one block.  Kelly Merideth added nine kills, while hitting at a .421 clip.  Merideth also posted 10 digs and one block.

After two weekends on the road, the Lions will return home when they host the Florida Southern Moccasins in SSC action on Tuesday evening.  The match is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
