ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Saint Leo volleyball team is still on the hunt for their first Sunshine State Conference victory as the Lions fell on the road to Eckerd College 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 25-22) on Friday evening.
It proved to be a match that was much closer than the final scores indicated as the Lions (6-5, 0-3 SSC) played the host Tritons point-for-point at the early parts of each set. In each game, it was the same story repeated as Eckerd (9-5, 3-0 SSC) managed runs of at least four-straight points that tilted the game, and ultimately the match, in their favor.
In set two it was the Lions who benefitted from the big run as four-straight points for the Green and Gold broke an 8-8 score in favor of Saint Leo. It was a run that was too few for the Lions in the remainder of the match as last year's regional finalists went on to claim the victory.
The Tritons converted their possessions into points as they hit at a .314 clip while the Lions could only manage a .188 attack average through the match. It was the Lions who were more accurate than their hosts with 20 miscues while Eckerd committed 21 errors.
Three Lions reached double figures in kills with Lauren Campbell as well Tawni Warren each posting 12 and Meghan Donovan adding 10. Warren added 16 digs in her double-double effort. In the primary setter role, Jaclyn Mailoto notched 38 assists.
Lindsay Biggs dominated for the Tritons with 20 kills and a .378 average. Ali McAlvany was right behind her with 17 kills.
The Lions will have just a day off before they travel to Tampa, Fla. to face 7th-ranked Tampa on Saturday afternoon. Things will get started from the Bob Martinez Sports Center on the UT campus at 4:00 p.m.
