SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University volleyball team could not manage a rebound from their Friday night setback to Barry as the Lions dropped their second-straight Sunshine State Conference contest in as many days behind a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23) loss to visiting Lynn University on Saturday afternoon.
In a match where the Lions (6-4, 0-2 SSC) had their fair share of opportunities, it was the visiting Fighting Knights (9-2, 2-1 SSC) who seemingly got all the breaks in the match.
The day could be best summed up in the fourth set with Saint Leo dominating behind a 22-18 lead. Looking to send the match into a deciding fifth-set, the Lions could not get the ball to fall their way as Lynn went on a 7-1 run to seal the win. It was an eight-point swing that saw the Lions give four points to the visitors behind errors or LU service aces.
Despite the loss, the Lions were led by Sami Vierk's 15 kills and Lauren Campbell who quietly notched 12 successful swings. Abby Lovell and Jaclyn Mailoto teamed up for 46 assists with Mailoto racked up a team-leading 26.
Meghan Donovan rejected three Lynn attacks, but the Lions' defense was largely absent as the Fighting Knights hit nearly .400 for the match, including a .609 average in Set 3.
Angie Caple was one of five Fighting Knights with double-figures in kills as she posted a team-leading 15 behind a .407 average.
The Lions will have nearly a week off before the travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. to face Eckerd College on Friday night. Things will get started from Eckerd's McArthur Center at 7:00 p.m.
