BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Saint Leo volleyball team split the first day of the 2012 SBU Purple Bash hosted by Southwest Baptist University on Friday. On the Lions' opening day in Missouri, they downed Drury 3-1 in the opener but fell to Pittsburg State by the same score in the final game of the day.
Both matches had a similar feel as it took the Lions (5-1) nearly an entire set before their offense began to click. Against Drury (4-3) the Lions were able to turn it around, defeating the Panthers (20-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-18) behind a team .236 attack average and nine team blocks.
On the flip side, the slow start against Pittsburg State (6-0) would cost Saint Leo as the Lions were only able to pull out a third-set victory in the (25-17, 25-23, 29-31, 25-21) loss. It was a contest that saw two of the Lions' biggest hitters post negative numbers in the first two games, forcing head coach Sam Cibrone to make some adjustments to the lineup that nearly worked in pulling out the win.
"I think in both matches we started out slow and it just caught up with us in the second match," Cibrone said. "I'm happy with the way we played in the first match as a whole; we regroup and played good for three games. The second match we played good for the second and third games and we lost focus again in the fourth game. There's some work to do."
The Lions will have that opportunity to get some more work in when they wake up bright and early to start the tournament's second day when they face Harding at 9 a.m. CDT (10 a.m. EDT).
