Rolling Tritons Too Much for Lions in SSC Sweep

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team could not overcome the momentum of a hot Eckerd College team that claimed its 13th-straight victory when they handed the Lions a straight-sets 25-13, 25-16, 25-16 defeat in Sunshine State Conference action from EC's McArthur Center on Tuesday evening.

Three Tritons (22-3, 11-2 SSC) recorded eight kills each to help control all facets of the match against Lions (12-13, 5-8 SSC) in order to complete the regular-season sweep.  Statistically, the 22nd-ranked Tritons led wire-to-wire with the Lions only managing to knot the score in the first points of sets two and three.

The current AVCA Division II National Player of the Week Lindsay Biggs proved her worth and led the Tritons with eight kills while teammates Ariana Chinn and Alex Laton equaled her offensive output.  Out-blocking the Lions 8-to-3, the Tritons also managed to capitalize on 20 Saint Leo attack errors.

Freshman Tawni Warren came away as a lone bright spot for Saint Leo with 11 kills and a .474 attack average.  Tonight's performance continues an impressive rookie campaign for the Thornton, Colo. native.

As a team, the Lions hit just .090 to the Tritons' .273 en route to the 2011 series sweep.  This marks the first time since the 2007 season that the Lions have been swept by the Tritons.

Saint Leo will look to rebound when it returns to the Bowman Center and faces Florida Southern in another pivotal NCAA South Region matchup on Friday night.  The match will also serve as Senior Night for three Saint Leo Volleyballers with Danielle Bletso, Corey Ryan and Emily Calderon-Reyes all playing in their final games at Saint Leo.  Ceremonies will get underway just before the start of the 7 p.m. match.  For the latest news, updates, and information on Lions Volleyball, visit
