SAINT LEO, Fla. – The seven point rally to save the Saint Leo volleyball team from sure defeat did not build enough momentum for the Lions to pull out a victory in a five set 3-2 (25-18, 15-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-7) loss to Eckerd College in Sunshine State Conference action Tuesday night from the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
With Eckerd (12-3, 5-2 SSC) up 2-1 in the fourth set and holding a 24-19 lead, the Lions were almost assured defeat, but a remarkable run that featured five Eckerd errors saw Saint Leo pull out the improbable 26-24 win. It knotted the match heading into the fifth and deciding set as Saint Leo (7-8, 3-4 SSC) had all the momentum.
Somewhere during the three minute intermission, and without a rally played, the Lions handed the edge back over to the visitors from St. Petersburg as they built a 3-0 lead before the Lions spun the scoreboard. Eckerd would proceed to leave little doubt as they held the Lions to just seven points and a .050 hitting percentage. The Tritons notched three service aces in the 15-point final set, including the final point.
Megan Donovan let the Lions with 18 kills and hit .371 along with four blocks. Danielle Bletso connected on 14 kills and hit .321.
Eckerd saw Ariana Chinn blast home 17 kills and Alex Laton added 13 kills in the win.
The Lions will attempt to rebound as they head out of Sunshine State Conference play when they host Elizabethtown College on Thursday night. The match is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 p.m. in the Bowman Center.
