TAMPA, Fla. – 11 service errors were just one of a number of setbacks the Saint Leo volleyball team could not fight back from as the Lions fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-22) to No. 2 Tampa in Sunshine State Conference action on Friday night.
The opening and closing sets saw Saint Leo (6-5, 2-1 SSC) stay even with the host Spartans, but it was Tampa (12-0, 3-0 SSC) who capitalized on SLU errors to stay a few points ahead of the Green and Gold. As if a fitting end, both sets were finished off by attack errors from the Lions, ending the match in the Spartans' favor.
Senior Danielle Bletso led the Lions with a game-high 14 kills and hit .400. Senior Emily Calderon-Reyes was second on the team with eight kills and junior Heather Martin came into the game in the second set to dominate with three kills in just four attacks. She also assisted on three blocks.
Tampa, who hit .365 as a team, saw Danielle Selkridge rack up 13 kills as she hit .647.
The Lions will stay inside SSC road play as they travel to Rollins College on Saturday. Start time for the match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Alfond Sports Center on the Rollins campus.
