Volleyball Primed for Conference Tilt with Florida Tech
SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Saint Leo volleyball team plays their first regular season contest in the Bowman Center when they host Florida Tech tonight. While the Lions have already played four games inside the friendly confines (going 3-1 at home), this marks the first single, regular season match at home.
Led by seniors Danielle Bletso and Emily Calderon-Reyes, the Lions are fresh off a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-13) win over Nova Southeastern where the tandem combined for 34 kills. It was a match where the Lions held the hosts from Ft. Lauderdale to just an .098 hitting percentage while posting 12 team blocks against the Sharks' attack. The defensive performance helps to bolster an already-impressive 48th place national ranking in the NCAA.
The Florida Tech Panthers are coming to Pasco County after suffering a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-23) setback to Eckerd College in their SSC opener on Wednesday. Entering her second year as coach, Erin Lee leads a much-improved Panther squad with five newcomers and three seniors helping make up an improved squad from 2010. Running into tough competition early on Florida Tech is currently 3-6 overall with wins coming against Wheeling Jesuit, Barton and Augusta State last weekend.
The Lions currently hold a 10 match winning streak over the Panthers, with Florida Tech's last win coming on November 4, 2005 in a 3-1 victory in Melbourne, Fla.
